Knowing the Sex of your new bunny is important, especially if you recently adopted a pair of rabbits. Young rabbits should be separated by the time they are 3 months old to prevent accidental breeding. At least from the age of 3 weeks and on, identifying a buck (male) from a doe (female) is usually quite easy.
The rabbits in the photos below are 7 weeks old. Lay the rabbit on your lap, tummy
up. With one hand, hold the tail between index & middle finger, and then with
your thumb press down at the top of the genital area. The sex organ will then
reveal itself. Don't be afraid to press quite firmly, as you need to see how far
it will come out - if you don't press enough, the tip of a buck's penis can
resemble a doe's vagina, but if pressed enough so that it extends fully, the
difference is more obvious.

An older buck is easier to identify. The head and body are generally more blocky
than the doe. Does of the medium and large breeds often develop a fold of skin
under their chins. This fold is called a dewlap. Older does are usually larger
than bucks of the same breed. A buck's testicles can be seen on a hot day. The
testicles must be kept at a certain temperature in order for sperm to be
produced. The testicles descend further on hot days and are brought back toward
the body on cool days. In this way their temperature is regulated.
